5 Inspiring Individuals in the Marketing and Advertising Industries

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

Without a doubt, the advertising and marketing industries account for some of the world’s most creative individuals. From one-of-a-kind copywriters to experts in the field of special effects, behind each of your favorite brands’ promotional campaigns is an artistic mastermind. Let’s take a look at some individuals that we at SparkIt find inspiring.

Dan Weiden

Have you ever heard of the phrase “Just do it,” associated with one of America’s favorite sports apparel brands Nike? American advertising executive and co-founder of Wieden + Kennedy (one of the world’s largest independently owned ad agencies), Dan Weiden, devised the tagline for the brand. W+K accounts for a plethora of campaigns under its belt with brands such as ESPN, Coca-Cola, Old Spice, Honda, and, of course, Nike. What makes Dan Weiden and his advertisement agency so special, you may ask? In an interview done with “Fast Company” by Bill Breen, Weiden shares their approach on marketing at the firm and the importance behind brand authenticity. When asked how exactly a brand can ensure its message is interpreted authentically, Weiden stated,

“Authenticity comes from having a real passion for the thing. When we first started working with Nike, we didn’t bother with focus groups and planning… We were trying to share something that we loved. It was that simple.”

Here, Weiden expresses the need to appreciate your client and what they stand for. Avoiding the manipulation of your brand’s audience, which is often done by marketing them as something they are not, is imperative for their success.

Charity Stebbins

Charity Stebbins is the Senior Content Director at Conductor. Prior to her employment at Conductor, she worked as a writer for the digital publishing company Shmoop, then relocating to New York City where she was a content manager for Smart Sign. With her career path finally leading her to Conductor, Stebbins has continuously risen in rank over the past five years, earning her the current title of Senior Director of Brand and Communications. Charity Stebbins’ research efforts with Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society paved the way for female leadership in the marketing industry, showing the influence that content marketing has on consumers.

Greg Hahn

Greg Hahn’s story is especially inspiring considering his constant resilience. In April, due to cost-cutting efforts as a result of Covid-19, Hahn lost his job at Batten, Barton, Durstine, & Osborn (BBDO) New York. This month, he has announced the launch of a new New York City-based agency that he is co-founding, Mischief. During his time at BBDO, however, he creatively contributed to some of the industry’s most unforgettable productions such as the “HBO Voyeur” and “HBO Imagine” campaigns, alongside award-winning marketing efforts for Sports Illustrated and Timberland. Hahn recurrently contributes to columns for Adweek, Muse, and Campaign Magazine, earning him recognition as one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business” by Fast Company Magazine along with one of the top 10 Creative Directors by Adweek.

Erika Heeren

Erika Heeren, president and owner of Heeren Content & Strategy, uses her knowledge in the fields of marketing, public relations, and content development in very impactful ways. Working alongside small business and nonprofit organizations, she makes the betterment of her community the foundation of all she does. As a military spouse, she values the overall strength exerted by military personnel and their spouses. As the president of her own firm, and with over 15 years of experience in the marketing industry, Heeren prioritizes hiring veterans and spouses of active-duty military personnel and devotes her time to volunteering with the Institute for Veterans and Military Families as a mentor. Erika Heeren is an inspiration not only because of her accomplished career as an entrepreneur and marketer but the passion she conveys through her work.

Alex Bogusky

Inducted into the American Advertising Federation’s Hall of Achievement, Alex Bogusky is the Co-Chairman at Crispen Porter + Bogusky. Bogusky is credited for completely recreating 20th-century advertising norms, putting a much more innovative spin on the more popular form of marketing at the time, commercials. Bogusky is the force behind many memorable campaigns for brands such as Volkswagen, Burger King, and Microsoft. Without a doubt, the risk and edginess associated with Crispen Porter + Bogusky’s image has the ability to draw in and drive-away clients; however, many of their best campaign’s wouldn’t exist without the eagerness to push the brand's boundaries.
